Georgia Department of Labor Georgia Independent Living Network Independent living services in Georgia are provided by local nonprofit consumer organizations. The independent living philosophy promotes consumer control, peer support, self-help, self-determination, equal access, and individual and systems advocacy. The goal is to maximize the leadership, empowerment, independence, and productivity of individuals with disabilities. The integration and full participation of individuals with disabilities into the mainstream of society is the desired outcome. There are eight (8) Centers for Independent Living (CILs) throughout Georgia; check the SILC web site at the address below for specific information about each. The Statewide Independent Living Council of Georgia (SILC), a private nonprofit corporation governed by people with all types of disabilities, collaborates with individuals, the CILs, and the VR program to promote equal participation of people with disabilities within their communities.
