First and foremost, HS/HT seeks to improve education and training outcomes for youth with disabilities. The program encourages kids to stay in school and graduate, and to aim for college – whether at a technical, two-year or four-year school. Teachers as well as site
coordinators guide students through career exploration and planning, and provide counseling about life after high school, including postsecondary education choices as well as employment options. All efforts expose youth with disabilities to careers relevant to the 21st century and the global economy.
HS/HT helps educators and employers understand more thoroughly the uses of assistive technology and the accommodations and facility access needs of individuals with disabilities. In the world of day-to-day realities, this translates to focusing on students’ abilities, not on their disabilities. It also fosters an appreciation for creating successful work places – hospitable environments for potential employees who have disabilities.
HS/HT encourages everyone in the student’s support network to be on board and involved in whatever way each can best provide support to the student. The bottom line is to have each person touched by a HS/HT student to be a positive spokesperson for the program and to be motivated to further its reach.
